IWDeaf is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy. IWDeaf is celebrated through various activities by respective Deaf Communities worldwide. These activities call for participation and involvement of various stakeholders including families, peers, governmental bodies, professional sign language interpreters, and DPOs.

Every last week of September, IWDeaf calls for a global movement to raise awareness about human rights of deaf people.

We also to celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL)  #IDSL2019 as part of the IWDeaf. The IDSL has been adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and is celebrated annually on 23 September. The objective of the IDSL is to raise awareness on sign languages and strengthen the status about sign languages.

The cross-cutting theme for both IWDeaf 2019 and IDSL 2019 is “Sign Languages Rights For All!”

Each day of the week from Monday, 23 September to Sunday, 29 September 2019 has a specific focus. These sub-themes aim to include groups within the Deaf Communities for everyone to equally benefit from their sign language rights.

In order to promote #IDSL2019 and #IWD2019, we encourage you to use freely the video materials that we have prepared in your local advocacy. The WFD encourages you to hold community events on those days appeal to you. At each event, you can hold a fundraiser to help support the WFD's ongoing work to realise full human rights for all deaf people!
