Overview
The Sendai Framework states that disaster risks have local and specific
characteristics that must be understood for the determination of measures to
reduce those risks. Adopting a 'whole-of-society approach' that utilizes
local insight, wisdom, and capacity will dramatically scale up efforts to
reduce disaster risk. To explore this critical issue further, the
Multistakeholder Panel I will be part of will explore three main pathways to
strengthen the understanding and management of disaster risk at the local
level. First, how the participation at sub-national and local levels of
communities, youth, women's groups, grassroots organisations, and local
authorities can be enhanced. Second, how the interface between science,
policy, and practice can be expanded. Third, how the value of local,
indigenous, and traditional knowledge can be increasingly central to
building resilience. The panel will present a variety of perspectives and
approaches on how such risk knowledge and management can be developed,
drawing on broad and diverse parts of our communities.

2. Proposed intervention from Ms. Martine Abel-Williamson QSM
At this stage, we are planning for an initial 5-minute intervention from
each of the 5 panelists. For Martine , we are proposing the following
guiding question:
Could you please share 1 or 2 good examples where the perspectives of
persons with disabilities have been integrated into efforts to reduce
disaster risk? What were the barriers and how were they overcome?
Do watch this space and I'll get more info through soon.
Nga mihi
Martine
