Background

The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women<https://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/CEDAW.aspx> (CEDAW) is an international human rights treaty that aims at advancing the rights of women all over the world. Adopted on December 1979, it has now been ratified by 189 countries, including all countries of the European Union.

In addition to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the CEDAW is an important document to defend the rights of the over 60 million of women and girls with disabilities in the European Union, and all over the world.

Women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple and intersectional discrimination in all areas of life, including, socio-economic disadvantages, social isolation, violence against women, forced sterilisation and abortion, lack of access to community services, low quality housing, institutionalisation, inadequate healthcare and denial of the opportunity to contribute and engage actively in society. Discrimination, human rights violations and abused have continued, and even increased, since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.

Reporting on the situation of women and girls with disabilities to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women<https://www.ohchr.org/en/hrbodies/cedaw/pages/cedawindex.aspx> is an important opportunity for organisations of women with disabilities, organisations of persons with disabilities and women’s organisations. Yet, until now, the Committee has received limited information on women and girls with disabilities.

Objectives

The webinar will aim to:

•       Present the CEDAW and its importance for women and girls with disabilities

•       Learn how to engage with the CEDAW Committee

•       Hearing from organisations who reported to the Committee about their advice on preparing submissions
