What is Coronavirus: COVID-19 and what health measures is the Pacific taking?

On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak, first identified in Wuhan China.

In a statement, the World Health Organization said it was working closely with Pacific governments to strengthen their capacity to detect and respond to cases.

A spokesperson highlighted that several Pacific countries have instituted measures at international points of entry to try to mitigate the risk of the virus being imported.

New Zealand sets up public sector hub set up to support Pacific

The New Zealand Government has announced it will support a Pacific-led hub that will strengthen public services across the region.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rt Hon Winston Peters says strengthening public services is a core focus of New Zealand’s Pacific Reset.

Minister Peters said “These efforts to improve democratic governance in the Pacific contributes to a strong, stable and more secure region in which New Zealand is anchored.

Regional Pacific NDC Hub office opens in Suva, Fiji

A new Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Hub Office has been opened by Fiji’s Prime Minister Honourable Voreqe Bainimarama in Suva.

This marks an important milestone for Pacific Island member countries determination to take a leading role in meeting the climate change targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

The establishment of NDC Hub is a direct outcome of the Inaugural Climate Change Action Pacific Partnership (CAPP) Conference and was originally launched by Fiji’s Prime Minister in 2017 at the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany.

PCF sets standard on effective partnerships with Pacific region

The Pacific Cooperation Foundation (PCF) successfully launched a range of initiatives in line with its mission to bring enduring economic, social and cultural benefits empowering communities in the Pacific region.

In its Annual Report for 2019 published recently, the New Zealand based NGO has detailed the initiatives that it launched across the Pacific region.

Collaboration helps boost regional fisheries

Around 45 attendees and representatives from around the Pacific region gathered in Fiji this month to attend a project workshop to boost Pacific coastal and small tuna fisheries.

The regional project— Enhancing livelihoods and food security through fisheries with nearshore fish aggregating devices in the Pacific — will strengthen fish aggregating device (FAD) programmes, strengthen fishers’ associations and cooperatives, promote alternative livelihood activities and improve safety at sea for small-scale tuna fishers.

RISE and World Mosquito Program enlist mosquitoes in fight against disease

Mosquitoes are part of everyday life in informal settlements in Fiji. Stagnant pools of water, rainwater-filled containers and homes provide an abundance of breeding sites.

One small bite carries a big threat, spreading diseases like dengue, Zika and chikungunya that spread quickly and can have devastating health consequences for entire communities and countries across the Pacific.

But these dangerous vectors are also the key connection point of a unique partnership between two research programs: RISE and the World Mosquito Program (WMP) are both working towards a healthier world, and both rely on mosquitoes to get there.

The EU and Samoa step up their cooperation

On 12 February 2020, in Brussels, Belgium, the European Union (EU) and the Independent State of Samoa (Samoa) held their second-High Level Political Dialogue under Article 8 of the Partnership (Cotonou) Agreement signed between the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) and the EU.

The Dialogue provided an opportunity to review recent developments in the EU, Samoa and the wider Pacific. Discussions also focused on the country's long-term Strategy ‘Samoa 2040’, which is currently under preparation, and development cooperation with the EU.

The meeting took stock of the ongoing negotiations of the Post-Cotonou Agreement.

Towards Achieving all SDG's

The state of literacy and numeracy in the Pacific

A recent study has found that the literacy and numeracy skills of primary school students across the Pacific have improved.

The 2018 Pacific Island Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (PILNA) was a huge collaborative exercise across Pacific island countries to find out just how well primary children in the region are reading and counting against minimum expected proficiency levels.

PILNA 2018 comprised over 7.5 million individual data points with more than 40,000 students, 2,000 plus teachers and upwards of 900 schools across 15 countries involved. PILNA 2018 was administered in 10 languages with over 500 teachers, ministry officials and other officers from the participating countries involved in the development, administration and coding of the assessment.

How parliaments make a difference

Parliaments make a concrete difference in people’s everyday lives. That includes everything from establishing the conditions to create jobs to safeguarding freedom of speech to increasing budget allocations for health workers in rural areas.

They are at the heart of inclusive decision-making — without their effective involvement policies risk being less representative of the needs and interests of the whole of society, and thereby less efficient.

And they have the power to transform words into action by representing their constituents, enacting legislation, adopting national budgets, and holding governments to account.

Child rights in the Pacific: UN committee to meet in Samoa

The UN Child Rights Committee is due to hold an extraordinary session in Samoa from 2 to 6 March to focus about children’s rights in the Pacific region.

It will be the first time any of the UN human rights treaty bodies, as the Committees are officially known, will hold a session outside Geneva and New York.

During the meetings, the Committee will review three countries - Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Tuvalu. It will also hold a preparatory session for a future review of Kiribati.

Here’s how we can give a boost to the SDGs in Asia and the Pacific

We are now into the final decade of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ambitious global development agenda has spurred new policies, investments, and collaboration to tackle significant social and environmental challenges confronting the world. Yet based on progress to date, Asia and the Pacific will not achieve any of the 17 goals by 2030. More positively, the United Nation’s SDG progress report for the region notes that steps have been taken towards ending poverty (Goal 1) and ensuring that everyone has access to quality education and lifelong learning (Goal 4). In addition, measures are being taken to achieve affordable and clean energy (Goal 7).

First comprehensive portal to track international capacity development support for forest monitoring

The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) has launched a portal - the first such comprehensive platform - to track international capacity development support to developing countries in forest monitoring for climate action.

The portal - the GFOI Inventory of Activities - is a one-stop shop with easy-to-access information on more than 400 forest monitoring activities in 70 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Users can search for information by country or region, by type of forest monitoring activities, and by donors.

UNDP launches world’s biggest survey of public opinion on climate change

On February 13, celebrities and youth activists met with UN officials, governments and civil society to launch Mission 1.5, a campaign that aims to bridge the gap between people and governments on ambitious climate action.

Mission 1.5 aims to give 20 million people around the world the opportunity to have their say on ways to limit climate change that they want to see adopted by government leaders. The campaign, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hopes to address the disconnect between citizens and governments that has seen a groundswell of public opinion by citizens around the world, including school strikes and mass protests.

Millions tap on the Global Goals App

New York – In 2019, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Samsung Electronics announced a partnership to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals.

Today, through this partnership, millions are learning about the Global Goals where their attention is increasingly focused—on their mobile phones—and taking action on the issues that matter most to them. The Global Goals app is one of the many unique ways that UNDP is reaching people where they spend their time, so that they can spend it for good.

Global Tourism Plastic Initiative

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, have announced the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative.

To promote a shift towards circularity, the initiative calls on all tourism companies and destinations to take concrete actions to tackle plastic pollution and increase plastics recycling.

The Global Tourism Plastics initiative aims to reduce plastic pollution from the tourism sector through a set of actionable commitments by 2025.

World’s largest platform for air quality data launched at Tenth World Urban Forum

Abu Dhabi - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), together with UN-Habitat and IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company, today launched the world’s largest air quality data platform, bringing together real-time air pollution data from over 4,000 contributors, including citizens, communities, governments and the private sector to work towards healthier, more sustainable cities.

Launched at the Tenth World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi, this partnership – currently reaching over 15 million users and covering more than 7,000 cities worldwide – aims to sustain and grow the world’s foremost air quality databank.

Applications for Australia Awards Scholarships for study in Australia in 2021 are now open!

The Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.  They aim to contribute to the development needs of Australia's partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements.

They provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

IRENA Launches Capacity Building Programme for Young Professionals from LDC and SIDS

A new IRENA initiative to establish a capacity building programme for young professionals from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), has been launched. The programme provides an opportunity for young professionals from LDCs and SIDS, with the agreement and support of their governments (or institutions), to serve at IRENA Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates or at its office in Bonn, Germany, for a period of one to two years. The programme aims to build capacity for addressing renewable energy issues in SIDS and LDCs and to provide experience in an intergovernmental organization setting.

Applications for 2020 UN Global Climate Action Awards Now Open! Beginning from this month, organizations, cities, industries, universities, governments, and others taking bold leadership on climate change can nominate their work for a UN Global Climate Action award.

The award, the focus of United Nations Climate Change’s Momentum for Change initiative, recognizes the world’s most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of action to tackle climate change.

Five years into the agenda, 2020 will be a key critical for accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. 2020 is also the kick start of the Decade of Action announced by the UN Secretary-General and marks the UN’s 75th anniversary. The 2020 edition of the SDG Global Festival of Action will be a milestone to raise the visibility and impact of these global initiatives, with great focus on local and innovative actions and solutions that can lead to transformative change toward the SDGs.

12th Head of Fisheries meeting

The SPC Heads of Fisheries meeting provides oversight of all SPC work in the field of fisheries and aquaculture, as well as an opportunity to discuss topics of regional interest.
