If Women Stop, The World Stops!
#WomensGlobalStrike

Feminists, partners and allies around the world are ready for systems change with the Women’s Global Strike! International Women’s Day is a day when women over generations have risen up and protested, putting their lives at risk, to defend their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

On 8 March 2020, we honour that history, reclaim the day, and revive women’s collective power to change the world.

Here’s a quick run-down on what has taken place, what will happen, and what lies ahead as we grow our movements.

WHY ARE WE STRIKING?

In response to unkept promises made by governments to advance human rights, equality, development, and peace for all women, more than 150 feminist organisations and 177 individuals from over 45 countries worldwide have called for Women’s Global Strike on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2020). Under the theme, “If Women Stop, The World Stops”, the strike calls women from every corner of the world to stop or slow down their formal or care work and come together to demand women’s human rights. We will not do housework, domestic responsibility, and where necessary ask male partners and allies to show solidarity by taking over responsibilities for home, family and community. We will bring together women and queer allies in our networks and communities to march, to speak out and to come together.”

We mark 25 years since the commitments made by the world’s governments for women’s rights at the 1995 Fourth World Conference for Women, known as the Beijing Platform for Action<https://apwld.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=118e22b87fa01f36b66ad923d&id=3037643c6f&e=b1095c68d6>. Still, structural oppression against women – whether it is patriarchy, neoliberalism, globalisation, militarism, fundamentalism or environmental destruction, persists worldwide: Read More<https://apwld.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=118e22b87fa01f36b66ad923d&id=9f3cb5a3eb&e=b1095c68d6>

WE CONTINUE TO TAKE ROOT, GROW, AND STRENGTHEN OUR MOVEMENTS

The call for a Women’s Global Strike was welcomed by many organisations and individuals. We reached out to feminist organisations, partners and allies all over the world who readily embraced the strike and started their own conversations on the necessity and relevance of the strike in their own contexts. We also received inquiries and expressions of interest from other groups and people who believed in what we were doing.

We updated our political statement in several languages clearly articulating our reasons for striking and our demands: Read More<https://apwld.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=118e22b87fa01f36b66ad923d&id=f3547c2524&e=b1095c68d6>

WOMEN OF THE WORLD, STRIKE!

Our creativity and resourcefulness are limitless! Despite difficulties in organising and attempts to suppress our voices, we have many different forms of action ranging from community theater forums, solidarity brunches, photo exhibits, women’s caravan, tribunal – and even a concert!

Check out the growing list of strike actions happening on March 8th by clicking below!

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER 8 MARCH 2020

On 11 March 2020, we will have a side event on ‘Escalating Global Strikes: Connecting Struggles and Building Solidarity for a Feminist Future’ where women leaders from across regions and struggles will share their experiences of mobilisation for the Women’s Global Strike, and the power of the strike as a ‘weapon of love’. This will be at The People's Forum<https://apwld.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=118e22b87fa01f36b66ad923d&id=97518da09b&e=b1095c68d6> in New York, but will be live streamed on both English and Spanish channels.

We submitted a session proposal titled: ‘Women’s Global Strike: Our Resistance, Our Future’ for the AWID Forum 2021 to be held in Taiwan.

8 March 2020 is a milestone that will make its mark in our collective story of resistance and becoming. And we will continue to grow our movements because we want a world that is better, more equal and just. We want systemic changes, and we will put ourselves on the line until we get it!
