The economic report warns that a patchwork of pre-existing solutions won’t work and points out that governments must coordinate with each other to hasten the recovery. This is a global crisis and working in silos is not an option, it says. <br>

The report: “Position Note on the Social and Economic Impacts of COVID-19 in Asia-Pacific,” calls on countries in the region to avoid returning to the pre-pandemic environmentally unsustainable development path, and to capitalize on the opportunity to build

A group of ten retired Fijian midwives has recently returned from Samoa after completing ten successful weeks, supporting maternal health during the measles epidemic. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Pacific Sub-Regional Office had deployed ten retired
but qualified and currently licensed midwives, from across Fiji to stay in Samoa for ten weeks, supporting the maternity and labour wards of the nation’s hospitals.<br>
The Government of Samoa declared a state of emergency on November 15, 2019 to respond to an ongoing measles outbreak in the country. Samoa’s measles outbreak last year had strained health service provision, diverting critical resources away from other non-measles
essential services, in a bid to scale-up vaccination of target population and treatment services for existing measles patients.<br>

Additionally, in the 55 food-crisis countries covered by the report, 75 million children were stunted and 17 million suffered from wasting in 2019.<br>
<br>
This is the highest level of acute food insecurity* and malnutrition documented by the Network since the first edition of the report in 2017.<br>

As the Pacific Islands are responding to the threat of the global pandemic COVID-19, many children are in danger of missing out on life-saving vaccines against measles and other diseases due to the slowing down or disruptions in immunization services.<br>
Last year, over 80 people died from a measles outbreak in Samoa, the majority children. American Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga also declared measles outbreaks. Pacific Island countries and areas responded with supplemental immunization activities to protect children,
close existing immunity gaps in the childhood immunization programmes and vaccinate adults at risk of infection.<br>

Digitizing social welfare payments can be a win-win for all stakeholders involved when done right; the recipients of welfare receive their payments in a more convenient and cost-effective way, the government can streamline services to make them more efficient
and reduce illegitimate payment, and the service provider gains more customers. <br>

It was this thinking that motivated the Department of Social Welfare in Fiji to convert their paper-based voucher payments to a digital method of paying out support to families in need of income support. <br>
In 2018 the project partners decided to assess the impact of digital payments over the last seven years. The result was an extensive study culminating in this report. <br>

In an effort to step up monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) efforts to improve the management of its tuna fisheries, Solomon Islands will soon be the first state in the region to introduce a digital catch documentation and traceability scheme for the
Noro port. <br>

Following a workshop held in March in Munda, Western Province, plans are in place to have Noro port, which will be known as an e-port, conduct a pilot of the scheme. <br>

The port of Noro is the only one in the region with all three types of fleets: purse seine, pole-and-line, and longline. It exports regionally and internationally, shipping whole fish, loins, canned fish, and sashimi-grade tuna. <br>
