Subject: First Level Information on Tropical Cyclone
Colleagues,
Greetings! Please share via the PDF list serv and also to the OPDs. HRDU Team please be innovative and amplify this information.
To help you and your networks with your preparedness for this cyclone season, please see attached the 2024/25 Tropical Cyclone SeasonalOutlook for the Pacific region, as prepared by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) in Nadi. The role of the RSMC is to provide "first-level" information on tropical cyclones (ie, basic information covering the tropical cyclones' present and forecast position, movement and intensity) in the South-West Pacific Ocean.
Highlights:
* Total Cyclones Expected: 5-6 cyclones in the RSMC Nadi Area of Responsibility (AoR - this covers Kiribati, Northern Cooks, Southern Cooks, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Nauru and Fiji), slightly below the long-term average of 7 per season.
* Severe Cyclones: 1-2 severe cyclones (Category 3-5) anticipated, also below the average of 3 per season.
* Regional Breakdown:
o West of the International Dateline: 2-5 cyclones (1-2 severe).
o East of the International Dateline: 2-3 cyclones (0-1 severe).
o Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ): 1-2 cyclones (0-1 severe).
Peak Periods and Risks:
* The season officially runs from November to April, with peak activity in January and February.
* Off-season cyclones are rare but possible, so vigilance is recommended year-round.
* Non-cyclonic disturbances, such as tropical depressions, may still cause significant impacts.
Kind Regards,
Sainimili Tawake
