7th Pacific Regional Conference on Disability Side event:

Indigenous persons with disabilities often experience multiple discrimination and face barriers to the full enjoyment of their rights based on their indigenous status and also on disability. The international community has recognized that special measures are required to protect the rights of the world's indigenous people.[1]

The indigenous peoples of Oceania are Papuans, and Austronesian Melanesians including Torres Strait Islanders, Micronesians, and Polynesians[2].

Indigenous peoples make up the majority populations of Oceania These differs from the term Pacific Islanders which usually excludes indigenous Australians and may be understood to include both the indigenous and non-indigenous populations of the Pacific Islands alike.

Join us tomorrow as we discuss key priorities for persons with disability who are also indigenous persons.

Subject: Invitation to attend the PDF Side Event on Indigenous Persons with Disabilities -Session 1 of 3 Sessions!

Good Morning Everyone,

As a build up to the PDF 7th Regional Conference on Disability, we are hosting a series of virtual side events. One of which is the PDF side event focusing on Indigenous Persons with Disabilities!
The objectives of this event are as follows:

  *   To provide an economical viable forum to discuss and to share issues relevant to context of indigenous persons with disabilities with consideration to the Pacific region diversity.

  *   An information platform to inform indigenous persons with disabilities in the region on the different engagement opportunities such as EMRIP and UNFPII as well as treaties aside from the UNCRPD but yet complement the convention such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

We are excited to share with you this series of three sessions! The first session will be held tomorrow Thursday 9th February from 2 pm to 3:15 pm Fiji time. Please find below the registration link for Day 1!
