Please mark your calendars for the next gender equality dialogue in the South-South Gender in Focus dialogue series between the UN Women Multi-Country Offices of Fiji and the Caribbean.  This dialogue will focus on women in resilience and takes place on Thursday, 22 July from 10:30am-12pm.  Speakers include Senator Hilda Heine from RMI and Ms. Elizabeth Riley, Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

Topic Background
The Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) adopted in 1994, further complemented by The Mauritius Strategy of Implementation (MSI) of 2005 and MSI+5 Outcome document, recognized that although they are afflicted by economic difficulties and confronted by development imperatives similar to those of developing countries generally, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have their own peculiar vulnerabilities and characteristics. SIDS’ unique and particular vulnerabilities, including their small size, remoteness, narrow resource and export base, exposure to global environmental challenges and external economic shocks, including to a large range of impacts from climate change and potentially more frequent and intense natural disasters, as well as high rates of violence against women, continue to pose challenges to the achievement of the SDGs.  Despite such challenges, SIDS continue to address those structural and external issues to achieve their sustainable development in ways appropriate to their context and that redefine resilience.
