A very warm Pacific and New year greetings Frances

It is certainly shocking to hear of this news on the untimely passing of Dr James Aiwa; someone I have worked with in the area of special education, education of blind and vision impaired children, disability rights and disability movement building in the Pacific since the late 1980s when I had just begun my engagement in this sector. Chief James as I often called him has been a key figure, pioneer and a gentle giant in disability-related work in PNG, and of course here in the Pacific. I also take this opportunity to thank James’ family for sharing this champion with the disability community in PNG and the Pacific! I’m very fortunate and blessed to have known and worked with this great person.

So long my dear and long-time friend Chief James and may your legacy inspire the rest of us to continue your vision of building a more disability inclusive society in our region!

It is with sadness that I share an email received today from Br Kevin Ryan, advising that Dr James Aiwa passed away overnight.
James was a well-known and respected member of SPEVI and a Past President of ICEVI Pacific. He completed his Education Doctorate with James Pagliano at James Cook University and had worked for many years at the University of Goroka, Papua New Guinea.

Hello all,

Apologies if you have this news already. I heard about an hour ago that Dr James died overnight after about 2 weeks in Goroka Base Hospital.

May he Rest in Peace and his family be comforted in this difficult start to 2021 for all of them.
