The Pacific Disability Forum has welcomed the introduction of the “Pay & Go” system by ANZ.
The Launching was today held at the ANZ house and included the regional organisation Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) as well as the executive Director for Fiji Society for the Blind, Ms. Barbara Farouk.
The Pay and Go system is a contactless payment method that securely transmits purchase information via a tiny antennae embedded in the card. The card also has two features on it to assist persons with disabilities, specifically those who are blind or with vision impairment. These features are the inclusion of Braille into the card where a single dot is used to identify an ANZ Credit card whilst two dots signify that the card is an ANZ Debit card. This assists in distinguishing the two as the normal card does not have this feature. Another is the use of a high visibility edge with a notch cut into it to indicate the side which will go into the ATM.
Speaking at the event, Forum Chief Executive Mr. Setareki Macanawai says these small steps taken by the Bank whilst it may be small to some, is a major step for the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
“These new cards are a major boost for those citizens with disabilities in Fiji. It is empowers us as it allows us to personally go and do shopping or withdraw and not rely solely on the help of another. This is also a testament to what we strongly advocate for in terms of accessibility being a precondition to our inclusion as well as full and effective participation in society. The incorporation of these features have allowed our members to be able to access their money. We are indeed grateful for the initiative.”
ANZ bank has been working closely with the Pacific Disabilities Forum and this is the second instance of such close partnership with the first being the Bank’s speedy response in making their Branch in Vanuatu more accessible to persons with disabilities who use wheelchairs as mobility aid. The issue was highlighted to ANZ during PDF Board Meeting in Suva few years ago and in the spirit of assistance, the matter was quickly rectified.
PDF has applauded the step taken by ANZ Bank especially taking into account the current global pandemic COVID 19 which is affecting the country. The Forum is confident that this has set the precedence for further partnership with the private sector.
