COVID-19 and tropical cyclone Harold hit the Pacific region in various ways. Here's how the organisations kept their development projects going on.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Dr Stuart Minchin
Director-General
Pacific Community (SPC)

The Pacific Heads of Health recently held a virtual meeting under the shadow of COVID-19. The tone was understandably sombre and serious. The crisis being faced across the globe has certainly not passed yet, and our Pacific leaders will need to continue to be proactive and vigilant to ensure our region is able to successfully navigate through this storm.

Nevertheless, after six months facing the COVID challenge, the Pacific is standing as an example of what can be accomplished when a region works in unity towards a single purpose. As of July 2020, less than 500 cases have been recorded across Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

Why has the Pacific been so successful in managing the crisis up to this point?

It is true that the population is small and spread out, but even taking the geography and population into account, it is still remarkable how well the region has done in protecting its population from the pandemic. An examination of how the Pacific leaders have faced up to the COVID challenge highlights a few key principles which have made a major impact. PROTEGE: A network of agroecology demonstration farms in the Pacific OCTs – The project’s Agriculture and Forestry component is designed to encourage an agroecological transition to climate-change-adapted and biodiversity-friendly farming, particularly organic. This goal will be achieved, in large part, by establishing a regional network of demonstration farms using innovation practices that comply with agroecological principles, based on farmers’ knowledge and skills. Graduation marks milestone as interest in micro-qualifications increases – ONE of the first micro-qualifications developed by the Pacific Community has been successfully delivered by the University of the South Pacific. The university graduated its first cohort of students with the micro-qualification in the operation of a small seafood business in June. The micro-qualification, which teaches all the aspects of how to successfully operate a small seafood business, was one of three micro-qualifications developed in the pioneering work by SPC's Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP). Pacific nurses at the frontline of the fight against COVID-19 – With the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic, the world started giving greater attention to health professionals who work at the frontline of the response. The crisis arrives at a time where more qualified health professionals are desperately needed: according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 9 million more nurses and midwives are needed globally if we want to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. It is to highlight that need, that WHO designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. READ MORE<https://pacificcommunity.cmail20.com/t/j-l-qtujdty-yddldiukyk-jl/>

When it comes to domestic and gender-based violence talk is not enough – When we say that we are shocked and alarmed about women and girls being abused, attacked or even killed, by their husbands and partners, what do our words achieve? The sad answer is that words alone are not enough to bring an end to domestic and gender-based violence. If we are serious about ending this stain on society, we must turn our words into meaningful actions. READ MORE<https://pacificcommunity.cmail20.com/t/j-l-qtujdty-yddldiukyk-jk/>

Pacific Community’s Statistics for Development Division launches “QGIS for Census and Survey Mapping” manual – SPC has published a manual to help National Statistics Offices and other government ministries undertaking censuses and surveys make optimal use of QGIS, an open-source and free geographic information system (GIS) software. GIS software was not used regularly by PICTs, mainly due to its cost. This has all changed now with QGIS, that allows PICTs to handle most of the operations needed by their National Statistics Offices and ministries.
