‘Leave No One Behind’ on World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March

People with Down syndrome advocate to be included in the workplace

People with Down syndrome speak up and advocate for their human rights, to government representatives and UN officials today in a side event to the United Nation’s Committee on the Rights of persons with Disabilities.

My friends from school are going to get apprenticeships and I want to get a job too - the same as my friends,” said Pearl Lüthy of Switzerland who has Down syndrome. “When I work I will have work colleagues and earn and spend my money to travel anywhere I want to go,” she added.

It is not automatic for people with Down syndrome to go to school with their peers and often they are excluded from the workplace, or offered volunteer work.

Robert Martin, the first person with an intellectual disability to be elected to the UN’s Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities said, “Today we remind governments of their commitment to an accessible and inclusive environment for people with Down syndrome who want to have a job, earn a living and contribute. Hear their voice”.

Side event: Palais des Nations, Room XVII from 13.50 – 14.50.

Following the event at the UN, two events have been organized by the local Swiss Romande Down Syndrome Association.

1. Flashmob for WDSD! 16h30 at the Place des Nations.

Under the 'Broken Chair', singing, dancing and live performances:

· A song called Moi Aussi - about rights for all - by a Swiss/Irish singer-songwriter (http://www.eoghanosullivan.com/ma-premiere-chanson-en-francais/),

· A solo from a young violinist with Down syndrome from Zurich.

2. The famous Geneva landmark, le jet d'eau (water fountain), will be illuminated in blue and yellow for WDSD at 19.00.
