In this December 2019 edition of the Solevaka Newsletter we highlight the Voices of the People, Pacific Partnership for the SDG’s, Global Initiatives & a Summary of Events.

Building on from the Pacific Solutions Exchange (PSE), Solevaka is an online knowledge and engagement platform for the Pacific that strives to bring the development community and key stakeholders together. Solevaka emphasizes dynamic discussion and consultation to create connections and linkages between people and providing fit-for-purpose tools and resources for sustainable development and to reach those furthest behind.

In the Pacific context, technology can overcome barriers to progress by addressing the issue of collaborating and coordinating multiple stakeholders and actors scattered over vast distances.

Nasilasisila leads Women’s Empowerment in Ba, Fiji

Since her husband passed away in 2014, Vika Nasilasila has been looking after the wellbeing of her family. Nasilasila is originally from Nadarivatu in the highlands of Ba but lives in Nailaga, where her late husband hails from.

She has four grown-up children who have their own family, however, in 2018 she was hit with another untimely loss. This time, her daughter-in-law passed away following a short illness.

Survey to map efforts under the Pacific Framework on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities launched

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has launched a survey to ascertain the current status of national and regional efforts towards ensuring disability rights and issues which are to be incorporated into development plans and efforts and to collect information to update the Pacific Framework on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PFRPD) matrix.

In addition, the survey hopes to align efforts made at national and regional levels against the Pacific Framework on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PFRPD) Implementation Plan.
Development partners, national entities and the private sector have been encouraged to participate in the survey following an outreach.

UNDP strategy supports mapping of private sector in the Solomon Islands

At the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator emphasized the role of the private sector by mentioning “the private sector can bring both agilities in delivery and new approaches to financing the SDGs, the UN has an important role to play in creating an enabling environment for business to contribute.”

Information sharing critical to understand the level of efforts and initiatives in climate change in the Pacific

UNDP releases Human Development Report 2019

The United Nations Development Programme released its 2019 Human Development Report on Inequality on December 9.

Titled, ‘Beyond Income, Beyond Averages, Beyond Today,’ the report identifies a new generation of inequalities that are increasingly determining people’s opportunities in the 21st century.

Progress made at COP25, despite lack of agreement to increase climate ambition
Negotiations at the COP25 UN climate conference in Madrid, Spain ended on December 15, wrapping up an event which saw much progress made by the private sector, and by national, regional and local governments.

However, there was widespread disappointment that no overall consensus was reached on increased climate ambition.

Summary of Events

16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

December was a busy month. By the first week, the 16 days of activism were already halfway having begun on November 25 and ending December 10. The Pacific region supported the civil society initiative and under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General's UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) called for actions to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was observed on December 3. The theme for 2019 IDPD is 'Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda'.

International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development
The International Volunteer Day was celebrated on December 5 with the theme "Volunteer for an inclusive future", and UN Volunteers highlighted SDG 10 and the pursuit of equality – including inclusion – through volunteerism. Through volunteerism, communities around the world often experience strengthened solidarity and inclusion.
