"BRED Bank encourages its customers and corporate clients to aspire, to
set goals and to achieve – all of which are aims of the Vanuatu Paralympic
Committee (VPC), so we are very glad to be able to support parathletes from
Santo to attend a pre-competition training camp than to compete in the
Melanesian Games to be held in Vila next week with this donation of 450,000
vatu,” commented Cassie Phelan, BRED Bank Marketing Manager as she handed
over the cheque to Friana Kwevira, Vanuatu’s Commonwealth Games Bronze
medallist.

As Friana entered the bank, she was surrounded by customers and bank
officers all wanting to look at and feel the medal.

“Please, take the medal and pass it around,” said Friana who still finds
being the centre of attention a strange experience. “It’s not really my
medal – it’s yours, everyone in Vanuatu. I won it for you all.”

Friana Kwevira was identified as a potential parathlete at a VPC Talent
Identification Day in Luganville in April last year. Accommodation,
airfares, training costs, food, bus-fares and uniforms will be able to be
provided through BRED Bank’s generous donation to the other four Santo
athletes travelling Port Vila this weekend. They will be joined by 6 other
parathletes from Vila to compete in running, javelin and shotput events
integrated with the Melanesian Athletics Championship Program.

The recent Commonwealth Games saw the integrated approach work very well
with parathletic events interspersed with ale bodied competition. With over
200 athletes from 18 countries including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, PNG,
FSM, New Caledonia and Samoa, the competition promise to be entertaining
and diverse.

“I just want to thank BRED Bank for this funding,” commented Friana.
“Living with a disability in Vanuatu is very difficult in terms of
education, training, paid employment and of course sporting opportunities.
We are often referred to as ‘the forgotten people.’ Having this opportunity
to compete in big public competitions like the Pacific Mini Games, the
Commonwealth Games and the Melanesian Championships allows the general
public see our abilities – not our disabilities. It’s all about
possibilities – not impossibilities.”

“Good banking is very similar. BRED Bank prides itself on seeing potential
and then supporting it,” concluded James Hudson, General Manager of BRED
Bank. “That’s what makes this support for our Vanuatu parathletes such a
good match.”
