On Tuesday, March 13, as part of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (“CSW62”),  <https://womenenabled.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9dfe19d1e6db65f1a6409b5e2&id=a218efeee8&e=83ee9f1276> Women Enabled International officially launched its accountABILITY Toolkit! 

The Toolkit empowers women with disabilities and organizations working on their behalf to use U.N. human rights mechanisms to ensure that the human rights violations women with disabilities experience receive redress and that statements, recommendations, observations, and guidance from the U.N. incorporate an intersectional gender and disability rights perspective.

In the twenty-first century, women and girls across the globe continue to experience gender-based discrimination that impedes the full realization of their human rights. In particular, Women and girls with disabilities – 20 percent of the world’s women and girls – encounter multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination on the basis of both gender and ability. High rates of gender-based violence, lack of access to justice, and denial of sexual and reproductive health information, goods, and services are particularly pernicious manifestations of the discrimination to which women and girls with disabilities are subjected. Bringing the voices and experiences of women and girls with disabilities to the U.N. human rights system is essential to hold States accountable for their human rights obligations and to advance the rights of women and girls with disabilities worldwide.

The accountABILITY Toolkit consists of a series of briefing papers and fact sheets:

•    A guide to advocacy with the U.N. human rights system;

•    A summary analysis of U.N. human rights standards on sexual and reproductive health and rights;

•    A summary analysis of U.N. human rights standards on the right to be free from gender-based violence; and

•    Three fact sheets summarizing how civil society can engage with U.N. treaty bodies, U.N. Special Procedures, and the Universal Periodic Review.
