1. Launch of the Global Study report

We are pleased to announce the launch of the global report entitled: “Case Study on the Engagement of Organization of Persons with Disabilities (DPO) in Voluntary National Reviews.” This comprehensive report is built on the contributions and grassroots work of persons with disabilities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within their countries.

[X]Over the last 6 months, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities have engaged with their governments in national consultation processes on the implementation of the SDGs. To reflect work carried out by DPOs at the national, regional and global levels and compile best practices and challenges, a group of volunteers collected inputs made by DPOs from Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Nigeria, Togo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Argentina, El Salvador, Peru, Guatemala, Indonesia, Bangladesh and India, and consolidate them into an outcome document entitled: “Case Study on the Engagement of Organization of Persons with Disabilities (DPO) in Voluntary National Reviews”.

The report, which will serve as a case study for Member States, and as a model for DPOs to engage with their government, has been launched today during the preparatory meeting, organized by the UN DESA/DSD, in partnership with the Major Groups and other Stakeholders (MGoS) HLPF Coordination Mechanism (CM).

The amount of information that was provided also varies from country to country. Please note this is a live working paper in which will have substantially additions, after the HLPF 2017, including an analysis of oral statements from Member States reporting on VNRs. 2. High Level Political Forum opens on Monday 10 July

Persons with disabilities arrived from all over the world to follow the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), opening tomorrow at 9:00 am.

50 advocates of the rights of persons with disabilities, including a number of self-advocates,  are prepared and ready to contribute and address the forum on Monday and the subsequent days. This is the largest delegation of persons with disabilities to attend such a high-level event, and provides further support for the principles enshrined in the 2030 Agenda of ‘leaving no-one behind’. They will participate in side events, bilateral meetings with member states, and make interventions at the Forum.

3. Persons with disabilities engage in a full-day preparatory meeting on Sunday 9

Meeting of major groups and other stakeholders

On Sunday 9 July, Members of the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities (SGPwD) actively participated and contributed to a prepatory meeting, organized by the UN DESA/DSD, in partnership with the MGoS HLPF Coordination Mechanism (CM). The meeting was geared towards supporting representatives of MGoS to prepare and coordinate their engagement in the sessions and meetings of the HLPF. Jose Maria Viera, representing the SGPwD at the preparatory meeting, delivered opening remarks and called on all civil society participants to include persons with disabilities in their work during the HLPF. Jose Maria Viera was also lead facilitator of the voluntary national reviews group discussion.

The preparatory meeting facilitated the exchange of important lessons learned in terms of the implementation, follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at multiple levels and the coordination of MGoS participation and advocacy at the HLPF.

In the afternoon of Sunday 9 July, participants of the SGPwD informally met to get to know each-other, discuss issues, strategize interventions during the official program of the HLPF, and share ideas for participation and advocacy during the Forum.
