Greetings from the Pacific Disability Forum.
Education plays a crucial role in the development of a person’s life. Education in the Pacific has developed over the years. However, persons with disabilities are still left out in most Pacific education system due to the lack of resources, accessibility and availability of inclusive, safe and quality education system. Quality education for all means that all people have equal access to, and are effectively participating and included in, the education system on an equal basis, with the provision of necessary support and resources to facilitate teachings and learnings processes. Furthermore, it guarantees reasonable accommodation of disability specific needs for persons with disabilities.
In the Pacific 10, Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) with the recent approval of the Fijian Parliament to ratify the CRPD. The CRPD article 24 accentuate the need for States Parties to recognise the right of persons with disabilities to education with a view to realising it without discrimination and, on the basis of equal opportunity. Hence, to guarantee inclusive and holistic quality and safe education for all persons with disabilities, government need to develop, implement and monitor necessary mechanisms that will support and ensure persons with disabilities enjoy their right to education.
Furthermore, it is important for government to work with persons with disabilities and their representative organisation, academic institutions, disability service providers and other key stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach towards guaranteeing access to education for all persons with disabilities.
In this week’s weekly update, children with Down syndrome should be brought to schools, equal access to education for all children, Fiji is building on the strength of children with autism, educators learn the role of technology in teaching at USP. These articles highlighted the need for parents, government, schools and stakeholders to work together in ensuring access to safe and quality education for all. It highlights the key role of governments in ensuring that necessary support and resources are available in the education system, and disability needs of all persons with disabilities are reasonably accommodated. Furthermore, it stressed the role of parents in ensuring that their children are in school.
In addition, the article stresses the key role that technology plays in ensuring access to education for persons with disabilities and supporting educators in their teaching. Moreover, the realisation of persons with disabilities right to education will be holistic if government commit adequate resources towards guaranteeing the right to access education for all persons with disabilities.
Also in this week’s weekly update disability focus for economic ministers and Hawaii targets medal for government’s backing.

The Minister for Education Dr. Mahendra Reddy is calling for love, care, attention, acceptance and equal opportunities for children living with Down Syndrome. While officiating at the World Down Syndrome Day Observance at Suva Special School, Reddy says these children are sometimes neglected and discriminated in society and this has to stop because the law forbids it.

Workshop coordinator Dr Shikha Raturi said the workshops are a combination of sharing good practices and hands-on session to enhance academic staff’s pedagogical practices and assist with their professional development in learning and teaching. “It is becoming exceedingly important that learning resources provided to students are accessible and we all need to be aware of the facilities at USP’s Disability Resource Centre including assistive technologies.” Dr Raturi added.

THE Government is determined to provide the best education for all children by paving easy accessibility for wheelchairs into schools. Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Dr Mahendra Reddy said there were going to be certain designated schools where children with special needs were provided additional support where wheelchairs could enter into classrooms.

Tuvalu is hoping their participation in the Oceania Para Championships will encourage the Tuvalu government to get people involved in table tennis. Para athlete Ioane Hawaii said table tennis being a minor sport in their country was something the Tuvaluan representatives at the championship were hoping to change.
