With the COVID-19 pandemic, we are losing our social connections. However, by providing opportunities for people to connect and be heard, people may think of their own future. As more and more people think about what they can do to help others and act, the situation in our community will change. What can we do now, amid a pandemic? Why don't you look for clues to social connections that will lead to change, referring to examples from Japan and Asia? With this in mind, we are holding this symposium. After the symposium, we would like to have a chance to interact with the participants and speakers. Please join us!
Speakers:
1. Dr. Takashi Hanato (Medical Doctor working in Higashiomi City, Shiga, Japan) While working in community medicine in remote area, he presides over "Team Eigenji", a group of various community members who participate and support each other.
2. Ms. La-Ong Maneeterm & Mr. Somchai Rungsilp ("House of Hope" Foundation in Northeast Thailand) The House of Hope, a residential care home for the poor and orphans, was closed and transformed to support activities for children with disabilities left behind in the community, working with the local people.
3. Ms. Do Thi Huyen (Deputy representative of "DP Hanoi," Hanoi Association of People with Disabilities, Viet Nam) DP Hanoi runs a gym for people with disabilities in Hanoi, which is open not only to persons with disabilities but to the local community and has received support from the government, etc.
Commentator will be CBR/CBID expert, Mr. Somchai Rungsilp (Thailand).
In order to build an inclusive society, it is essential for people to work with and support each other. Through the engagement with people with difficulties, they have faced the challenges to be solved, worked with each other, and brought about change and transformation in their communities. In this symposium, we will discuss what we can learn from the outcomes of their practices from the perspective of CBID*, which aims to transform both individuals and communities.
* CBID: Community-based Inclusive Development - Proposed by WHO and implemented in many countries worldwide, CBID aims to promote the inclusion of individuals being faced with challenges, including those with disabilities, into the community and helping individuals contribute to society and change their relationships with others. In this approach, making a difference in communities is built in from the start. Social connection means reaching out to various resources from which problem-solving efforts are more likely to occur. This process of problem-solving then spreads from one problem to the next.
