Our Health, Our Rights, Our Lives!
Women's Health Matters
May 28 is the International Day of Action for Women's Health, which for over 30 years, women's* rights advocates and allies in the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) movement worldwide have commemorated in diverse ways. Year after year, women, girls, advocates and allies have continued to take action and stand up for sexual and reproductive rights for what they are: an indivisible and inalienable part of our human rights.
Now, at a time when women's human rights, and particularly sexual and reproductive rights continue to be systematically violated worldwide, mobilization both within and beyond our communities remains essential, in order to resist any rollback on our rights and advance sexual and reproductive justice for all. As the global geo-political context threatens to become increasingly regressive, it is more important than ever to denounce any attempts at curtailing women's rights, including our human rights to decide freely upon all aspects of our bodies, our sexualities, and our lives, free from coercion, discrimination and violence.
About the Campaign
Examples of Institutional Violence
[Denial of abortion]<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/the-denial-of-the-right-to-access-safe-and-legal-abortion-service/&c=E,1,sXJowlmlGcT_-D185sE54IAtIPftA3E5IHp3br_oeRYo4y83JpyLS3VvYV3iGLPprJhRPPGADPNyizn3H0pjbdVBstP5gke3LuR_wQ0Qio5PEDNo8auy-gg1&typo=1>
The denial of the right to access safe and legal abortion services<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/the-denial-of-the-right-to-access-safe-and-legal-abortion-service/&c=E,1,0_C3YRyet09z113epUyuStdj5QdKDxJkmTLXQvZpDETNg7SxiCFb9C8UTh5nJg3PMwn47UxE6tXfNHF0UXhLibiPJzmyrCUqGKaqUso,&typo=1>
The systemic denial of women's right to access safe and legal abortion services, and/or the criminalization of abortion is one of the most severe examples of institutional violence in regards of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
[Forced sterilization]<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/forced-or-coerced-sterilizations/&c=E,1,88Y_IYnD8ryvC_h65qwUDZ5i5u4Tp4-Yob8ty-oNKPtT41Jm1K_DQrcAqAJl_nXbNG1rkqWU5L-TZwl1SJXGMXc6-sBzf6yjCSp-VwBbtCFLVlE,&typo=1>
Forced or coerced sterilizations<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/forced-or-coerced-sterilizations/&c=E,1,ORYz0uJ4Au_l9_iwg11O6CbwYve1N9uIYZRswJAXrBm3h5owCjhz6J9zY_RljJnpK3DKsE5h9gaBV0Ya--vgipu1e4mRSgv3OftcRKym63v4WVnXsPiPuHQ,&typo=1>
Forced and coerced sterilizations are grave violations of human rights and medical ethics and constitute acts of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, as recognized by Human Rights Bodies. Nevertheless, women across the globe have been forced or coerced by medical personnel to submit to permanent and irreversible sterilization procedures.
[2]<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/obstetric-violence/&c=E,1,O8P-Yh06M1aBPoqR-c6qqIwupsE7WKx59hbK4qGSK92vbvm2yPMBvVSllGQ3uNGO_DABBlhtQokw7VyMUCkLzd8e4wMWi5Ey8h1nKzA,&typo=1>
Obstetric violence<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/obstetric-violence/&c=E,1,SN-dmQtDkmzLWiKHuqJwdBwUpbPC7_yIQivNWCHyqs2rrpCcQyUDpIYGvksyPspvpW_2lwtMoVM1IO6uqO-42xOilsWTh7vMhYL6NpiUhXhIEr4HqQ,,&typo=1>
Obstetric violence is a specific type of violation of women's rights, including the rights to equality, freedom from discrimination, information, integrity, health, and reproductive autonomy. It occurs both in public and private medical practice during health care related to pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum and is a multi-factorial context of institutional and gender violence.
[Denial of contraceptives]<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/the-denial-of-access-to-contraceptives-including-emergency-contraception/&c=E,1,VCTIpdg0Jehywo3zfb-3nxqZU13pcnyeofURHL6XHGSFoIaJE9DMZVLhhktm1YDfarRnU3Xis42C8raVx4BcwKDvsTezXMgcIAXW1lbbcO1mvGMr&typo=1>
The denial of access to contraceptives including emergency contraception<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=http://www.may28.org/the-denial-of-access-to-contraceptives-including-emergency-contraception/&c=E,1,4-kij0z5cMiIVmI4XSHdVpxQyD_fp7-YaDorfub7QRPGuFpJfXWOGIeJw6EYhROEJsDVpvoQkst3WXgNbKMfnDdGue1-NntQxzu8AKTCxKPDhwS92c7IIhY,&typo=1>
Restrictions on access to contraceptives and abortion threaten women's fundamental human rights to life, health and equality. Every woman has the right to decide when and if she wants to have a child. Denied access to contraception, emergency contraception and safe abortion services is a solid example of institutional violence.
May 28th, International Day of Action for Women's Health is being coordinated by the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR)

Now, at a time when women's human rights, and particularly sexual and reproductive rights continue to be systematically violated worldwide, mobilisation both within and beyond our communities remains essential, in order to resist any rollback on our rights and advance sexual and reproductive justice for all. As the global geo-political context threatens to become increasingly regressive, it is more important than ever to denounce any attempts at curtailing women's rights, including our human rights to decide freely upon all aspects of our bodies, our sexualities, and our lives, free from coercion, discrimination and violence.
This International Day of Action for Women's Health, we at WGNRR invite our fierce members, partners, and allies worldwide to Mobilise, Speak Out, and Take Action - let's stand together, voice our resistance, and remind world leaders that Women's Health Matters!
