Dear OPD leaders, colleagues and friends,

As you will be aware, the Pacific Disability Forum Strategic Plan 2021-2025 “Towards an inclusive and resilient Pacific for all persons with disabilities” is due to expire this year. On behalf of the PDF team, I am writing to provide an update on the development of PDF’s new Strategic Plan and outline what’s coming next in the process and how you can be a part of this important process. We are committed to developing this Strategy with your involvement as we deliver on our vision together.

Throughout the recent years implementing the current strategic plan, together with you, we have continued to learn, reflect, adapt and start planning for the future of PDF in supporting the Pacific Disability movement towards the realisation of an inclusive and resilient Pacific community. A participatory process is already underway and will continue over the coming months as we refine our thinking together with your input, and as we test ideas both with our members and development partners.

What’s been happening so far:

Over the past year especially, we’ve taken important steps toward shaping a strategic plan that reflects our shared priorities and the voices of the Pacific disability community. This has included:

• A review of our current strategic plan and achievements.
• A desk review and situational analysis to identify current challenges and opportunities
• Review of relevant documents such as the outcome statements from the 7th Regional Disability conference, and the many issues papers development by PDF over the last few years. This has also been informed by strategic pieces of work such as the preconditions paper, support services research, CBID paper and mapping on Gender, just to name a few.
• Initial consultations have been conducted with PDF members and key stakeholders across the region, this has already commenced in Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tonga, New Caledonia, RMI and Solomon Islands.
• Engagement with members and partners to gather input on future directions has also been undertaken through all of our work together over the past year. This has been happening and will continue to happen through a range of project such as Growing Stronger Together, Disaster Ready and UNPRPD trainings and many more.

We’re incredibly grateful for the thoughtful contributions made so far, which are helping to shape a strong and inclusive foundation for the next phase of our work, and we want to hear more from you.

How you can stay informed and contribute:

Your input is a vital part of this process. You will receive regular communication updates on progress and opportunities to contribute. We encourage you to engage, ask questions, and offer insights as we move forward together. Some examples of how you can be involved include:
• An online survey will be shared with you next week, this will remain open until the strategy is finalised
• We will be reaching out with plans for some further country consultation opportunities
• Further consultation will continue during June and July via online consultations and during a number of existing meetings including the Growing Stronger Together reflection meeting in June, and the Pacific Bridge meeting in July.

The next steps:

We’re now moving into the next stage of the planning process. This will include:

• Further consultation with members to test and refine the priorities arising from consultations.
• Developing a draft strategy and indicators for success – ready for validated by early August.
• Finalising the draft plan for endorsement by the Board in the August Annual PDF Board meeting.

We’ll continue to ensure that the process remains transparent, participatory, and grounded in the values and aspirations of persons with disabilities across the Pacific.
In the upcoming consultation opportunities, we want to encourage OPDs that we welcome you to provide honest and open feedback on the implementation of the current strategy and also how best the secretariat can further support your work you do for as an OPD, and for your members.

A few extra mentions:

For your information, Through our ongoing partnership with CBM Australia, I have requested the support of Tamara Jolly, Simi Bula and Lucy Daniel from the CBM Pacific team, You might receive emails from them, and they will be present in some of the consultation meetings. They are also supporting us with the analysis and write up and seeking feedback to help us finalise the strategy.

Importantly, We acknowledge the contribution of the Australian government and the New Zealand government for their support to enable this work to be delivered.

Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to the mission of the Pacific Disability Forum. Together, we are building a strong future for disability rights and inclusion across our region
Kind Regards,
