There are some useful discussions on GATE around WCAG and standards. My experience is the detail of these can be overwhelming to people who are non-technical, it is the same for most standards to be fair. 

To help a little here are some links to some useful cheatsheets for designing resources for accessibility including powerpoint and word documents, I have to thank Cyndi rowland from WebAim for the heads up 

http://ncdae.org/resources/cheatsheets/ has a series of printable sheets on producing materials for education but which are very applicable more widely 

https://accessibility.blog.gov.uk/2016/09/02/dos-and-donts-on-designing-for-accessibility/ has some great information downloadables on designing webpages for different needs
